Common Questions About Neck Pain
What causes neck pain?
Acute neck pain can be the result of a muscle strain due to overuse or poor posture. When neck pain becomes chronic, it may indicate you have an underlying condition that affects the health of your neck.
Many conditions develop due to age-related changes in your cervical spine, or neck. As the discs and vertebrae begin degenerating, you can experience a worsening of your pain and weakness or numbness that radiates down into your arms and shoulders.
Some of the most common conditions that lead to chronic neck pain include:
- Arthritis
- Herniated disc
- Nerve compression
- Degenerative disc disease
You can also develop chronic pain following a traumatic injury, such as a fall, car accident, or due to sports-related physical contact.
How is neck pain diagnosed?
When your neck pain isn’t treatable with over-the-counter medications and rest, Dr. Nair can diagnose the root cause of your pain so you can get the right treatment.
Following a review of your medical history, job, and lifestyle, Dr. Nair checks your neck for signs of swelling, redness, and tenderness. He may ask you to make certain movements to assess the range of motion and flexibility you have in your neck.
To confirm your diagnosis, Dr. Nair may order X-rays or an MRI to get a better look at the structures of your cervical spine and the soft tissues that support your neck.
How is neck pain treated?
Your treatment plan for neck pain relief depends on the root cause of your pain and its severity. Initially, Dr. Nair may recommend injections of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and inflammation and make it easier to engage in physical therapy.
Dr. Nair may also recommend spinal decompression. This nonsurgical treatment uses computer technology to apply force to your spinal discs to relieve pressure on nearby nerves.
When these therapies aren’t enough to address pain from conditions like a herniated disc, you may be a candidate for treatment with a spinal cord stimulator. This involves implanting a small generator device that delivers low electrical currents into your nerves. This electricity interferes with pain signals traveling to the brain and you can control your therapy with an external remote.
