Joint Pain Q & A
What causes joint pain?
Joint pain can be the result of several underlying conditions that affect the health and function of any joint in your body, especially your hips, knees, elbow, and spine.
One of the most common conditions that affect your joints is osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition that causes the breakdown of the protective cartilage on the ends of the bones. This allows your bones to rub together, creating friction and pain.
Rheumatoid arthritis is another condition that causes chronic inflammation in the joints, leading to stiffness and pain.
Other conditions that can cause chronic joint pain include:
- Bursitis
- Fractures
- Tendinitis
- Infections
- Fibromyalgia
- Osteoporosis
- Nerve compression
In addition to underlying disease, you may also develop chronic joint pain due to an injury from a fall, car accident, or sports.
How is joint pain diagnosed?
During your diagnostic evaluation for joint pain, Dr. Nair reviews your medical history and physically examines your affected joint. He looks for signs of swelling, redness, and warmth in the joint and tests your overall joint flexibility.
To get a better look at the structures of your joint, Dr. Nair may request X-rays or other imaging tests that can show fractures, nerve compression, and arthritis. You may also need blood testing to rule out infection.
How is joint pain treated?
The goal of treating your joint condition is to reduce pain and increase the function of your joint without the need for strong painkillers. If over-the-counter medications aren’t enough to treat pain and inflammation, Dr. Nair may recommend injections of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medications directly into the joint.
As you find relief from your pain, you can regain strength and function in the joint with at-home exercises and physical therapy.
Dr. Nair also provides specialized injections that focus on relieving pain in the joints of your spine. These injections include:
- Epidural steroid injections
- Sympathetic nerve blocks
- Cervical and lumbar facet joint blocks
If degeneration in your joint leads to compression on a nearby nerve, you may be a candidate for treatment with radiofrequency ablation. Dr. Nair uses a needle to deliver heat to the affected nerve and creates a lesion that blocks pain signals from traveling to your brain.
